God's Armor

Ephesians 6:12-13

12 “Our fight is not against people on earth. We are fighting against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness. We are fighting against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly world. 13 That is why you need to get God’s full armor. Then on the day of evil you will be able to stand strong. And when you have finished the whole fight, you will still be standing.”

Memory Verse: “Our fight is not against people on earth. We are fighting against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness…” Eph 6:12

The bible tell us that we are not to fight against other people but against our enemy the devil. He doesn’t like God’s children and fights against us in a lot of different ways that we can’t always see with our eyes. The bible explains he is behind all of the bad stuff in the world . We are not afraid because God has given us his own armor to fight with and helps us stay strong. If we fight God’s way we will win every time because God has already beaten our enemy.

Paul wrote this letter to a church that was in a city called Ephesus almost two thousand years ago. He wrote this letter while he was in prison for preaching about Jesus. Paul was teaching them that their real enemy was not people but the devil who was fighting against them.

Parents, ask your child these questions and discuss with them:

1.Ask them about a movie (or book) they have seen with a clear good and bad guy, (like Kung Fu Panda, Incredibles or The little Mermaid.) Who was the good guy? Who was the bad guy? Discuss the movie for a few minutes with the kids. Define that a good guy is the hero and the bad guy is the enemy. Do we have an enemy in real life?

YES In real life, our enemy is the devil. Our hero is Jesus. Satan doesn’t like God and is always fighting his children, trying to ruin things, just like the bad guys in the movies. Do you know why the enemy fights us?  He does not want us to live for Jesus or tell other people about him. He also doesn’t want us to live in heaven with God forever. But the bible says that God is our Protector and that he won’t let any harm come to us that could keep us from him. (Psalm 121) So we don’t have to worry because God is on our side and we have his armor and his super strong help!

2.  It sounds pretty awesome to have God’s own armor right? What is the

difference between the armor that God gives us and regular armor that we could

buy at the store?

The bible says that we must put on God’s armor. We can only fight satan with God’s help and the armor that Jesus made it possible for us to have. God sent Jesus, his son, to fight against the enemy 2000 years ago on the cross and Jesus won! Because Jesus paid for our sins and defeated the enemy we can win every battle against satan.

3.What do you think this armor looks like and what does it do for us?

The bible explains it in a way we can understand it, like a warrior’s battle armor! The armor is like super strong protective clothes that cover us from our head to our toes. It protects us from the enemies attacks, so we can stand strong and not move from God's plan for our life.

(Parents you can read Ephesians 6:12-17 then after ask them to pick out the pieces of the armor they heard, then ask them what that item might do in battle for someone, like belt holds the pants up)

-BELT (Truth) knowing the truth God says about us and our life.

-SWORD (Word of God) we need to talk to God in prayer and read the bible so we can know the truth that he wants to tell us. Sometimes God speaks a specific word to our heart or speaks to us through reading the bible.  We can use God's words to us like a sword!

-HELMET (Salvation) knowing we are always His children and he always loves us helps us to protect our mind and the thoughts that we believe

-SHIELD (Faith) believing in our heart that God is good and what he says is truth keeps us safe.

-BREASTPLATE (Righteousness) Righteousness means to completely make God happy with everything we do. Even though we make mistakes sometimes we just need to be sorry and God forgives us. Jesus is totally perfect in everything he does and he puts his perfection on us as a shield to protect us because he loves us.

-SHOES (being ready to share about Jesus) These shoes help you to stand strong! And you use them to go and tell others about Jesus and to love people like he loves them.

4. What are some ways that you can use this armor in your daily life?

When your scared at night, you can talk to God and he will tell you that he is with you, and you can remember that he tells us he will protect us and that he never leaves us. Or if someone says something mean to you at school, you don’t let it bother you because you know that you are a child of God and that he loves you and said that you are wonderfully made. (You can ask your child to come up with some ideas as well, to help them relate this to their own life.)

Parents go over the armor with your child and talk about how you use your armor every day. Give them an example of when you were in a spiritual battle and what you did in response. Explain how we use this is our everyday life, since we don’t have an actual armor to put on. Tell them how you believe in God’s word when the enemy sends doubt your way. Or how when you are dealing with a hard situation you can stand strong in words that God has spoken to you from the bible or in your heart etc.

Father God, thank you for loving us so much and for sending your son to die for us so we can live with you here and in heaven forever. Thank you for your armor and for helping us to know how to use it. Teach me your truth and your words, help me to listen to you and obey you. Show me how I can share your love with others around me. In Jesus name Amen.

  1. Have your child (if they can draw, otherwise you can do it) draw themselves dressed up in the armor. Help them to label each item. Put the picture somewhere where they will see it and go over the armor daily.  Remind them that their victory is always in Jesus, through obeying his words and staying close to Him in prayer.

  2. Memory Game. Cut thick paper into 12 squares and draw a piece of armor on half of the cards, on the rest of the cards write what each piece of armor does. Then place them face down and play a memory game with them.

We learn through repetition. Have your child say this with you each day:

I am God’s child and because of Jesus I am protected from the enemy!

God makes me strong with his armor!

I have a belt of God’s truth that I can live by.

I have a sword of God’s words to me where I know what God is saying about my life.

I have a helmet that protects my mind and thoughts.

I have a shield of faith and I know that God always keeps his promises to me.

I have a breastplate that reminds me that God is always happy with me because of Jesus.

I have shoes that make me ready to share Jesus with my friends and family!

I am strong and ready for any battle!
